About Us

Women in the Fire Service UK (WFS) is a volunteer-led, non-profit, and membership-based organisation. We exist to advance equality, addressing gender imbalance in the Fire and Rescue Service (FRS). Women are underrepresented in firefighting. Government figures (2020) show just 7.5% of firefighters in England are women. We want to see women more visible in the industry and beyond, so more women pursue it as a career, resulting in a more inclusive and equal service.

WFS has been in existence since the early 1990s, first set up as a self-help group, organising conferences and tackling issues of the time.

Today, we are managed by a Board of Directors and an elected national committee of fire professionals. We work with our members to help improve the recruitment, retention and progression of women in the FRS. We are well-known in the industry for training and development events and working with The Fire Service College. We also provide information and advice to women who are contemplating a career in the fire service; coaching and mentoring; a portal to search/post jobs; and provide speakers for schools, careers fairs, and fire and rescue service equality, diversity and inclusion events.

About our Chair

Julie King (Jules) was elected as Chair in 2019. Assistant Director for People Services with East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, she joined the FRS in 1994 and was first posted to Eastbourne Fire Station on Blue watch. Jules is passionate about women in leadership and attended the first WFS conference in 1996, two years after joining the service in 1994.
